The isolated and rural farming county of Lincolnshire, England is a place you come from - not move to.
Except for Penny May. She’s tired of the stress of her job in London, and it’s time for an early retirement. In an effort to reclaim the exuberance of youth that she once had, she gets a funky hair style, a classic motorcycle - and a dog with “issues”.
Dog ownership is harder than she expected, but she won’t give up. To avoid postmen, people in hats, people with bags and all the other dogs in the world, she has to walk in lonely places at lonely times … it’s almost inevitable that she stumbles across a dead body, really.
It might not be the most conventional way of settling into a new community, but the locals open up to her, and soon she’s involved in the investigation. But her need for justice brings her into conflict with Drew, the local blacksmith who’s been helping her with dog training, and Cath Pritchard, the detective constable. Is her need for friendship stronger than her need to find the killer?
And will she ever be able to walk her dog in daylight?
This is a clean read suitable for all; it’s a standalone novel with no cliffhanger, and the mystery is fair-play and solved.
“Some Very English Murders” can be enjoyed in any order but you may prefer to follow them chronologically. This is Book One. Book Two, Small Town Secrets, is out now http//amzn.to/1ys54BJ

I purchased all the books in this series at once and am working my way through them. This first book sets the stage for meeting Penny May, her dog, Kali, and the other residents of Lincolnshire and Upper Glenfield, England. The actual murder mystery is thinly plotted but serves the purpose of developing Penny, a 45 year old "retiree" from a hectic career in London, into a budding sleuth. Penny adopts a charming "Rottie" and struggles to become a dog person. As one who has been owned by a dog before, her trials and tribulations were easy to relate to and laugh at. Penny herself is not half as likable as her dog. She seems quite dull and limited in how to behave in a society of complete strangers. Her investigative attempts are silly and embarrassing. If I had not already purchased the rest of the series, I would have stopped with this book. That stated, the plots do get stronger and more enjoyable so don't give up as this series has potential!Product details

Small Town Shock Some Very English Murders Book 1 edition by Issy Brooke Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed reading this. It gave me a feel for English rural areas and small villages. Along with following the dialect made me feel quite English!! Good story line that moves along well. The characters are easy to get to know as they fit into the story. It's a good read.
Mystery lovers and dog lovers will love this
What a delightful find. This well-written, smart, and funny mystery takes place in the countryside north of London when Penny May takes an early retirement from producing TV shows and buys a cottage in a picturesque village for some stress relief with a rescue Rottweiler for company. Kali, the dog, has a will of her own and sniffs out more than Penny bargained for on one of their early walks. Penny finds herself pulled into small town life when she embarks on some amateur sleuthing and meets the town’s local characters, who have suspicions of their own about the newcomer. It kept me guessing to the end, with a touch of incipient romance to spice things up one hopes in future books. This may be one of my favorite cozy reads in recent years. Thumbs up.
I thought the most interesting character in the book was Kali. As the owner of a rescue St Bernard with the same problem but an extra 80 lbs weight I knew the writer had had close experience with such a dog in real life. She carefully describes the constant worry, guilt and fear that this is an insoluble problem that may result in a huge lawsuit if vigilance is dropped for one second.. The novel did make me vow to retry the treat cure and maybe experiment with leashes. Apart from the visit when Francine stayed overnight all of the other visits with people seemed very brief I would like to see the writer lengthen visits with other characters.
Penny adapted to her change of venue too fast. I'm sure there are some things about London that would be missed. The grammar was fine except there were several places where the sentence had a strange phrase, but I didn't know if the phrase was okay for the country or really a grammar error. There weren't very many. Some of the confrontations that Penny had with 'suspects' were downright unbelievable for any sane person.
The novel kept me entertained for several hours and I would consider purchasing another.
Penny has moved to Lincolnshire from London. She had been on the edge of a health crisis from the stress in her life. She hopes that her early retirement will allow her to return to a happier time in her life.
Shortly after she moves into her cottage, she goes to a rescue site and acquires a dog. Penny knows nothing about dogs. She went with the thought of finding a small, manageable and cheerful dog. She finds a Rottweiler, Kali, who is cheerful but hard to handle.
While walking her dog, she discovers a dead body.
Ms Brooke writes really well. I loved her humor and her descriptive phrasing. She is able to provide the atmosphere and feel of the area. I felt immersed in Lincolnshire.
I got sick of Penny. She had been a successful woman in a high paying position. So, evidently moving to a village has sucked every brain cell out of her head.
Her choice of a dog is a large and powerful dog and she does not even know how to walk that dog.
She blunders around insulting the people she meets. She openly accuses people of being involved in murder. This is a village where everyone she meets will be her neighbor. It never seems to occur to her that living in a village means courtesy should come into relationships.
I am sorry, but I got 2/3 through and simply had to stop. I wanted to slap someone.
I will repeat. Ms Brooke is a talented author, but I do believe that her main character should be someone I would like to get to know, not bury in the back yard.
This was a cute story, and as an American it's fun to read the British dialect! There's no way the main character would get away with her shenanigans in America though haha bonus points for using a Rottweiler as a good dog! They make very good pets if you know how to train them right.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's not a deep, philosophical rendering, nor was that what I was after when I chose this book for reading. Instead, this is a quick-paced, easy read that provided me many smiles, a good storyline, and even an insight or two into how the gears work in some people's gray matter. From the viewpoint of my 80+ lb rescue dog, we think the inclusion of Kali's story was spot-on!
It's always a delight when a reader discovers a new author/series to follow, and this book turned out to be one of those gems. Well-written and edited (although the author's comments in the afterword seemed to indicate that American readers sometimes find British slang or local dialect confusing)...well, I would argue that I found two teeny-tiny errors in grammar that weren't part of the character's speech, but I'm pedantic when it comes to other people's writing. The story was believable, with, for once, a good reason provided for the amateur sleuth to be so snoopy! Many quirky characters, a wonderful modern-day village setting, and, for a light-hearted murder mystery, a great deal of character introspection. All in all, highly recommended.
